So, here is our room, C-003. This is where we have met two days a week, for the most part, for the Spring semester of 2005. Take a look inside. It is not too big or fancy. It is simple and pretty old. Without fail it is uncomfortably hot when we arrive to class. Luckily we have a nice air-conditioner that quickly remedies the situation. C-003 is located in the Basement of Collins cravens. Collins, as you can see by the pictures, is a truly beautiful dorm. The outer courtyard definitely makes up for the somewhat dilapidated feel of our room. On sunny days we can liven up the room by opening the windows and letting the sunlight and fresh air poor in. For those readers who are not familiar with Collins, it is a dorm on the Campus of Indiana University. IU is located in the town of Bloomington in Southern Indiana. Bloomington becomes quite pleasant in the spring, but during the months of January, February, and a bit of March it can be quite cold and unpleasant. IU is such a big campus that students may find themselves trudging around a couple miles a day in cold and, occasionally, snowy weather to get to class. So, how has the environment affected our culture? Surely, the native culture of Hawaii would be different if the islands of Hawaii we as cold as Alaska. Would the Effin culture differ if Indiana was like Costa Rica? Sure, our climate definitely affects our dress. When it is cold we dress warmly and when it is warm we dress lightly. Generally we all wear clothes from mainstream companies with some exceptions. Some of our members pay more attention to being with the trends than others, but that has nothing to do with the environment persay, but more of the social culture they are involved with outside of class. Suffice to say in the colder months we dress warmly and when it warms up we dress lightly. Naturally we all regulate our temperatures like anyone else, and that is not really cultural in and of itself. It must be seen that our environment does not effect our culture as much as the native cultures of Alaska or Hawaii because for years The U.S.A. has been institutionalizing ways to make the environmental factor have minimal consequences. Air-conditioning, permanent shelters, abundant food supplies for those who can afford them, and bus systems are all cultural solutions that neutralize potential environmental influences on culture. Really, our classroom in Collins Cravens cannot have much to do with how we act as a culture. Each one of us, with the exception of Jack who has many more, has about 18-21 years of experience that has already helped to form our behavior in our culture. Weather our room is cute or dismal cannot change everyone’s habituated personalities and ways of being. Really, we could all meet anywhere on campus and still have essentially the same culture. We could probably even meet in another state and still have the same culture. Our cultures name implies that we are not bound by our environment, "No-Limit". We are "Free-Flowing" so we can adapt to changes but maintain our essential cultural identity. Our culture is created from the people who make it up and not the surrounding environment. Of Course if we were all from Spain, or some other country, our culture would be different, but only because each student would have a different habituated personality, not because of the environment. Thus we are who we are because of who we are.
