We are known as the Effin-loo-ah. More commonly called the Effins. Effin-loo-ah actually comes from an abbreviation F.F.N.L.U.A. Which stands for the Free-Flowing, No-Limit, Ungoverned, Allstars. You may ask yourself, "Why the Free-Flowing, No-Limit, Ungoverned, Allstars?" That is an excellent question.
As you may or may not know the Effin culture was created by the students who enrolled in and attended, for the most part, H303. Through out the span of the fall semester we have had various discussions and done different things together. Through these interactions we have formed a class culture. Then the point came when our professor, Jack Drake Rollins, presented us with the task of giving ourselves a name.
So, initially we started brain- storming. Some of the first leading ideas for names were "The Dang Quesadillas", "Bauries-Hofkamperela-yeniak", "The Ungoverned Allstars", "The Gillamagong", and I assure you there were even more names of this caliber and greater tossed around (who could forget the 12 Babu Josies?). We were all pretty content with the name Bauries Hofkamperala yeniak, which took parts from each of our names and combined them to form an almost alcoholic name. Alas, our professor said that he did not feel that B.H.Y. really told people what our culture was about. He said we needed to keep thinking.
In a jovial spirit I, William Starsiak, put forth an idea. I did not expect the idea to be adopted. In fact, I thought it would most certainly be rejected, but I was mistaken. That idea was that we should be called the Free-Flowing, No-Limit, Ungoverned, Allstars.
Free-Flowing because we had not created any written rules(however, one of our prized citizens Jake has put together some mock rules of order and posted them on this wesite so that you may have an idea of how we interact). Our rules of order were very fluid and un-spoken.
No-Limit was included mainly because I liked the sound, and I still remember the glory days of the "No-Limit Soldiers" (I thought I told you). As a class, even I have to admit that we have limits. A prime example was when many people did not want to do an interpretive dance to display our choice of governance. They were limited by being self conscious. There are a dozen other examples. The main reason for No-Limit being in our name is because it sounds cool, and not because we are actually without boundries.
Ungoverned was actually initially suggested by Mr. Jack Rollins himself during our first brain-storming period. His tone of voice when suggesting it was not completely serious, but it had a nice to ring to it and it seemed to fit. Mr. Rollins always insists that even if we as a class think we are ungoverned we are wrong. He is probably right. It more represents the spirit of our culture. We all share the same feeling that "Hey we don’t have to answer to anybody!" We govern ourselves and take responsibility for our own actions so there is nothing left for anyone else to govern. Thus, we are ungoverned in a way.
Finally, we are all Allstars because we all have worked hard to be in the honors college and that is a testament to our academic excellence.
There you have it, the birth of F.F.N.L.U.A. Where did the Effin part come from? Well we have the lovely Josie to that for that. And why? Because that’s the Effin way (I know it is circular reasoning, but hey, it’s the Effin Way!)!
